Dr Alan Goodall has a Certificate in Education from the University of Southampton; and a CNNA Diploma in Educational Technology from Jordanhill College in Glasgow. He has taught in all levels of education from primary to tertiary. From 1974-1990 he was a Lecturer in Environmental Biology in what is now the University of the West of Scotland. In 2018 in recognition of his teaching and research he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of the University by the University of the West of Scotland (UWS)
Alan’s scientific research into the behavioural ecology and conservation of the rare Mountain Gorillas in Central Africa is well known internationally. In addition to his scientific and popular publications he published “The Wandering Gorillas” (Collins 1979) Now in eBook format on Apple Books and Amazon Kindle with his other books.
In another career he has over thirty years experience in using media in education, and has been asked to advise governments, universities and other institutions world-wide. Especially so after his award of a Winston Churchill Fellowship in 1999 re “Creating Virtual Environments for Education and Training.” His video program “Among Mountain Gorillas” won international awards, and broadcast worldwide. This is now available on Alan’s YouTube channel - where it has been viewed over 260 thousand times. His material has been used in BBC programmes - including Sir David Attenborough's 'Trials of Life'. Alan became Director of Karisoke Research Centre (1987 - 1989). He was one of the first westerners to return to Rwanda at the end of the civil war in 1994 – where he briefly assisted the UNAMIR Force Commander Major General Romeo Dallaire during post war field operations. In 1999 he was also appointed Rwandan Honorary Consul in the new Scottish Parliament (until 2004)
